Free Resource

Kansas court records, for free.

You don't have to pay a third-party "background check" site to look up a Kansas case. The state runs a free Public Access Portal that covers nearly every district court — here's exactly how to use it, plus the official links for Sedgwick County jail, warrants, and Wichita Municipal Court.

6-step lookup

How to search.

  1. 01

Open the Kansas District Court Public Access Portal

The official statewide portal covers nearly every Kansas district court — including Sedgwick, Butler, Sumner, Harvey, Reno, and Cowley counties.

    Open the Portal
  2. 02

    Create a free account (optional)

Browsing public records is free without an account. You only need to register if you want to save searches, file electronically, or download certified copies.

  3. 03

    Choose a search type

Use Smart Search for a name lookup. Use Case Search if you have a case number. Use Attorney Search if you know the attorney of record.

  4. 04

    Filter by county and date

Narrow by county (e.g. Sedgwick) and a date range. Common names like 'John Smith' return hundreds of hits without filters.

  5. 05

    Open the case

Click the case to see charges, bond amount, next court date, attorney of record, judge, and the full docket history. Most filings are free to view.

  6. 06

Need a certified or sealed copy?

Certified, sealed, or expunged records require a request through the Clerk of the District Court in the county where the case was filed. Fees apply.

FAQ

Common questions.

Is searching Kansas court records really free?+

Yes. The Kansas District Court Public Access Portal lets anyone search and view most case information at no cost. You only pay for certified copies, full case-file downloads, or printouts ordered through the Clerk's office.

Do I need an account to search?+

No. You can browse the public portal anonymously. An account is only required for e-filing, saving searches, or paying online for certified records.

Why can't I find a case I know exists?+

A few common reasons: the case is in a non-participating court, it's a juvenile case, it has been sealed or expunged, or the docket has not yet been entered. For very recent arrests it can take 24–48 hours for the case to appear.

What records are NOT available online?+

Juvenile records, sealed cases, expunged convictions, certain mental health and adoption matters, and sensitive filings are restricted by Kansas law. Contact the District Court Clerk in person for those.

How do I get a certified copy of a record?+

Go in person (or mail a written request) to the Clerk of the District Court in the county where the case was filed. Bring photo ID and the case number. Fees usually run $1–$5 per page plus a certification fee.

Can I look up someone in jail right now?+

Yes — use the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Inmate Search above for current Wichita-area custody status. For other counties, search by name on the Kansas District Court Public Access Portal or call that county's jail directly.
